Security and modernisation for financial services business

Background

The longstanding IT support for this company had failed to modernise their system in ten years, leaving them running an out-of-date architecture despite the confidentiality of the data they were holding. What was worse, an onsite email server on the same machine as their client data HAD to be exposed to the internet, creating a vector for security attacks.

Our work

We migrated them off Exchange Server and into Google Apps immediately, moving all their old emails into the cloud for them, shut down Exchange Server and closed the firewall to prevent access from outside.

We then installed a Network Toaster to replace the legacy server, migrated all their data to it and set up their systems. This included a niche client management program and an older access database. Working with the supplier of the niche software, we performed the first migration of the system anyone had done to UNIX and sent back detailed instructions that could be provided to other companies wishing to do the same in the future.

Extending capabilities

We then trained them in Google Apps use, so they could use Google Drive folders with properly-managed security and permissions to distribute reports to clients and to collect uploads from the clients.

And we showed them how to build client questionnaires in Google forms to make them accessible on the web.

Helping others

One of the partners is originally from Zimbabwe, so he was especially enthusiastic about our computers for schools appeal. They donated old computers to the project.
